About this Webinar
What differentiates contemporary conversion practices from formal 'conversion therapy'? How do they affect LGBTQI youth specifically? What institutional and grassroots strategies exist to counter them? And did you know that bans on these practices are instrumentalised to undermine access to gender-affirming care? These questions will be at the heart of our next free IGLYO Webinar on LGBTQI Youth & Conversion Practices on Wednesday 14 October 2026 at 12:00–13:30 CEST.
Conversion practices encompass a range of interventions aimed at changing, suppressing or repressing a person's sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression. Rooted in the false and harmful premise that LGBTQI identities are undesirable, pathological or in need of correction, these practices can take multiple forms and occur across different settings.
This webinar will bring together activists, researchers and experts to examine the realities of conversion practices affecting young LGBTQI people today. Through a moderated panel discussion, speakers will explore how conversion practices manifest across different contexts, their impact on individuals and communities, current policy and legal responses, and what meaningful prevention, protection and support can look like beyond prohibition alone.
What will you learn?
Participants will learn all about:
- What is meant by conversion practices, including forms that extend beyond formalised “conversion therapy”
- How conversion practices manifest across different social, cultural, religious, healthcare and family contexts
- Current legal and policy developments at national and European levels, including the possibilities and limitations of legal bans, the importance of explicitly trans-inclusive legislation, and the risks posed by attempts to weaponise conversion-practice frameworks against gender-affirming care
- Prevention, survivor-centred support, education, professional accountability and community responses to conversion practices
By centering the experiences and perspectives of LGBTQI people affected by these practices and focusing on the particular vulnerabilities experienced by young people, this webinar hopes to provide LGBTQI young people and youth organisations with knowledge that can strengthen their advocacy and awareness-raising work.
