About the Research
For many LGBTQI young people across Europe, sports are still not a safe or welcoming space. Whether at school or in local clubs, they often face exclusion, bullying or silence - especially where homophobia, transphobia, intersexphobia, racism, ableism and other forms of discrimination intersect.
We believe sport should be a place where every young person feels seen, respected and free to participate. That is why we are launching a new research study to explore LGBTQI youth inclusion in school and community sports.
Building on our 2024 report on Trans, Gender-Diverse and Intersex Youth in Sports, this study will centre the voices of LGBTQI young people to better understand their needs, the barriers they encounter and the discrimination they experience. It will also identify best practices that foster more inclusive, safe and affirming environments.
The research, carried out by an independent researcher on behalf of IGLYO, will support our advocacy at the European level, inform policy debates and contribute to making sports more accessible and supportive for all.
About the Interviews
As part of this study, we will conduct one-on-one interviews with LGBTQI youth who have experience in school- or community-based sports. These interviews are a key part of the research and will help ensure that young people’s lived experiences are at the heart of the findings.
Each interview will:
- Be conducted online (via Zoom or another platform);
- Last around 45 to 60 minutes;
- Take place between 9 June and 4 July 2025;
- Be carried out in English or French;
- Include a 60€ compensation for each participant.
