What is the Global Online Activist Academy?

IGLYO’s Global Online Activist Academy is a 2-week skills-based training programme for young people between 18 and 30 years of age at the beginning of their activist careers who are passionate about activism, LGBTQI rights, learning and collaborating with other LGBTQI activists from around the globe.

Over the course of two weeks, participants will take part in 4 expert-facilitated workshops, as well as attempt 2 tasks to apply the skills they learned, while receiving feedback from the official Activist Academy judges.

The Global Online Activist Academy aims to strengthen the LGBTQI youth movement across the world by building skills and competencies, creating networks of support and exchange of practices, and increasing the resilience of young LGBTQI rights defenders, especially in hostile environments.

The Activist Academy is completely free of charge and we welcome applications from individuals and teams of up to three participants from all over the world.

NB: In June 2024, IGLYO will organise a one-week in-person Activist Academy, open only to participants residing in Council of Europe Member States. The aims and programme of the in-person Activist Academy will be similar to those of the online one. Keep an eye on our newsletter if you are interested in this opportunity.

How does it work?

Be prepared for a wonderful and intensive experience: The Global Online Activist Academy 2024 will include 6-7 mandatory online live sessions and a few hours of individual work or teamwork. The total time commitment of each participant will be around 30 hours, spread around 2 weeks.

As the cohort of the Online Activist Academy is very diverse, we will ask for your learning needs in the application process and provide expert-led workshops in line with your priorities. We will strive to create a programme which is relevant for you and can make a real impact in your life. We aim to offer 2 obligatory workshops and 2 optional ones so you’ll have the chance to choose the topics that are more important to you. Finally, we will give priority to workshops led by experts and practitioners from the Global South.

You can sign up for the Academy in teams of a maximum of 3 people, or alone (in which case you will have to fulfil all the Academy tasks by yourself). In case you do not have a team and would like to form one, we can facilitate this by teaming you up with other participants in the same situation.

What's on the agenda?

In a nutshell, here’s how this year’s programme will be organised:

Breaking the ice

The online Academy programme will kick off on Wednesday 3 April 2024 in an ice-breaking session where we will all meet online, find out more about each other, and learn how the Activist Academy works.

Expert workshops

You’ll start with 2 obligatory and 2 optional interactive masterclasses/workshops led by experts within the global LGBTQI movement. In total, each participant will need to attend 4 workshops.

Networking

One of the great added values of the Global Online Activist Academy is the opportunity to meet and network with other young activists from across the world. We will organise optional networking activities to give you the opportunity to get to know your fellow participants, the work they do locally, and the reality of LGBTQI rights in their country.

Real-life tasks

Once you’ve completed all the expert workshops, you will put what you’ve learnt into practice and translate your new skills and knowledge into action by undertaking two real-life tasks over the course of a week with the help of your team-mates and the support of online mentors, who are all graduates of previous Activist Academy editions. When your two tasks are ready, you’ll receive constructive feedback from our team of judges before making final changes and improvements.

Review and feedback

All your finished products will be reviewed by a team of experts and you will receive thorough feedback on your work.

Closing Ceremony

During the closing ceremony, the team of experts will present general feedback on the tasks and will give special mentions to outstanding work. Finally, participants will reflect on what they learned in the past two weeks.
