About

(A)MAR

The (A)MAR Project is the only LGBTQI support center in the Azores Islands. It is a project within APF-Açores, the Planned Parenthood and Sexual and Reproductive Health Association. APF works to ensure that everyone, especially young people, has access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive education and support around contraception, relationships, and sexuality.

As a project, (A)MAR is focused on supporting the LGBTQI community, especially young people, in the Azores by providing free and accessible psychological support to young LGBTQI people facing challenges around LGBTQIA+phobia identity, discrimination, mental health, or family issues.

(A)MAR also works directly with schools, offering informative sessions on sexual education and LGBTQI specific topics. These sessions aim to inform and create safer and more welcoming environments for LGBTQI students. For that reason, they also provide sessions to teachers and school staff to better support queer youth and address discrimination.

Their mission

(A)MAR’s mission is to challenge LGBTQI-phobia through education and to support LGBTQI youth by providing free psychological support and access to gender-affirming care.

In addition to working with schools and training professionals, their team is committed to projects such as Azores Pride and the creation of LGBTQI safe spaces for queer youth. They want to ensure that LGBTQI people in this remote, and often overlooked region, are seen, heard, and receive the support they deserve in a local and culturally-aware way.

Compared to mainland Portugal, stigma and discrimination are still very present in the Azores, making it difficult for many to live openly or access safe services.
